In our second month of classes, we had Project Management & Team Development. For this class, our Leadership Portfolio was actually a collaborative project in teams of five. We had to create an event idea based around a golf course and create the framework for the entire project from start to finish with concepts, budgets, risks, insurance, financial projections, etc. My group (Team Potentia) decided to create an event called “The Arnold Palmer Charity Event Weekend”. Arnold Palmer would obviously be the host of the weekend event. However, the idea was to bring in a number of male and female celebrities to play in a tournament paired with average citizens. The average citizens paired with these celebrities would be the highest bidders in a silent auction to play with their favorite celebrity. We had to plan the auction, the tournament, catering, liabilities, etc.
This project was a good test of how our classmates could interact with each other on a course-long project. Though we had various team issues and discrepancies, we were able to overcome them, work together, and deliver a professional final product on a tight deadline. I was able to improve on my weaknesses of problem solving when our team disagreed, and then influence to convince the team that my solution would be the best option to end our disagreement. Knowing a bit about psychology and sociology from my previous college, I was able to problem solve and influence my team’s personality disputes easier than I had originally anticipated because of my strength in understanding people. This Leadership Portfolio later boosted my confidence to land me a project management internship at the school, which eventually led to my job.
